Westward Ho! is a seaside village in Devon which lies south of Northam Burrows and looks westward into Bideford Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Westward Ho! is known for its surfing seas and the long expanse of clean sand backed by a pebble ridge and grasslands which extends for three miles and at low tide is about half a mile wide.

The unusual name of the village comes from Charles Kingsley’s novel of the same name which was set in nearby Bideford. Published in 1855, the novel Westward Ho! was an immediate success and gave rise to a renewed interest in North Devon. This prompted rich businessmen to see the potential of tourism in the area. The Earl of Portsmouth founded a hotel named ‘Westward Ho’ and soon enough, other villas started to pop up nearby. And thus, the town of Westward Ho! was born.

The A39 road provides access from the towns of Barnstaple, Bideford, and Bude. It lies at the south end of Northam Burrows and faces westward into Bideford Bay, opposite Saunton Sands and Braunton Burrows

The sea front promenade runs along the waterfront and makes easy access to the tidal swimming pool, beaches, restaurants and shops.

There are many coastal walks to explore and for cyclists, the Tarka Trail is close by, not to mention The Royal North Devon Golf Club, which is the oldest golf course in England. Should you wish to explore North Devon, Appledore is on Westward Ho!’s doorstep, while just over 3 miles away is Bideford, which is still a working port and market town and where The Oldenburg sails for day trips to Lundy Island.
